90% of Game Developers Now Use AI when Working on New Titles

AI is transforming the way mobile games, and in particular puzzle games, are designed. Google has announced that 90% of developers are now using AI to help create games, and that 97% of people believe it’s changing the industry for the better.

This not only helps to expand the creative possibilities that are available, but it also helps game developers move beyond static content with traditional rule-based generators. Puzzle games were once dependent on the quality and diversity of a word or number list, but now, AI is helping developers to not only build richer experiences but also games that have virtually limitless replayability.

Modern-Day Puzzle Games now have Limitless Potential

Every word puzzle has a vocabulary foundation. Developers once relied on curated dictionaries, or lists that had to be compiled by hand. While useful, lists like this require a lot of work to maintain. Modern AI models can analyse different data sets, while also identifying patterns, duplicate words, and even assigning a difficulty level to each creation.

Puzzle and word games can now be segmented by theme as well, with high-quality word lists that go far beyond what someone could create. Most of the time, all a developer has to do is come up with a core theme or word list. From there, AI can generate thousands, and in some cases, millions of variations. This makes it easier for games to essentially create their own levels as someone progresses, which creates limitless replayability for people. 

AI is also helping developers to hone their algorithms when creating puzzle games. Algorithms can be fine-tuned and tested with AI, ensuring that the concept is evaluated for localisation issues and translated into multiple languages if required. 

Developers can also use machine learning algorithms to devise puzzles that are not just random but solvable, ensuring that every single presentation works. 

Is Endless Replayability to Become the Norm for Modern Games?

Puzzle games aren’t the only game vertical to benefit from AI and algorithms, either. Strategy games like chess often involve playing against a computer. Algorithmic foundations may determine what move the computer makes, depending on the difficulty level, creating flexible yet endless replayability that helps to make the experience more immersive.
